Countdown to the Bank Holiday

It may be a dreary overcast Monday in the UK today, but what is left of Hurricane Kenneth will blow through the UK later this week, bringing the gulf stream with it, for a gloriously sunny and warm weekend.

What is more, it's a long weekend!   We love our Bank Holidays in old Blighty, and the Long Summer Weekend is upon us.  T-minus 3 days 'til blast off!

As usual, London City will have a packed schedule of events for you to enjoy, starting on Thursday and running all the way through Monday night.   Get your beach outfits ready!  Beach Party this time next week.

John Holt on Saturday

This Saturday it's John Holt in Concert.

Born in Kingston Jamaica in 1947, Holt was one of the biggest Reggae stars by the early 1970s.

Four years ahead of Bob Marley, in 1973 John Holt's Album 1,000 Volts of Holt became the first Reggae Album to break into the UK's Top Ten, spawning Top Ten singles entries for Help Me Make It Through The Night and Touch Me In The Morning.

Although subsequently eclipsed by Marley, John Holt is regarded as the first mainstream artist to bring Reggae music to the masses and he released 56 follow up Albums and toured regularly all over the world until his untimely death in October 2014, aged 67.

Join us on Saturday for original reggae with John Holt.

Party starts at 12pm SL (8pm UK) with the concert an hour later at 1pm SL.

Carter or Mattis?

On Saturday, we had a user poll (just for fun) which asked, if you could send only one person to North Korea, would you choose "the diplomat", or the "the military"?

We chose Jimmy Carter to represent the diplomat, because since his less than successful presidency, he has proven himself as one of the greatest humanitarians.

He has helped many times as the American diplomat sent to Korea in the past, negotiating with the North Korean government on four occasions since leaving office.

At 92 years old, it is however, extremely unlikely that he would again be called to perform such a duty.   It is however great fun to see Jimmy winning our "election" here in London City, beating the military option of General Mad Dog Mattis.

So here is how you voted.  Of 54 votes, 31 (57%) were for the diplomat "Jimmy" and 23 (43%) were for the military solution "Mad Dog Mattis".

You can draw your own conclusions as to which option is best.  But at this time, we declare Jimmy Carter duly elected to sort out the worlds problems.

In Jimmy, we trust!

A tribute to Glen Campbell - Saturday

In a change to our advertised show this week, we are presenting Glen Campbell's Goodbye Tour, in tribute to this legend, who died on Monday.

Glen Campbell's career spans over 50 years.  He is perhaps one of the best known Country singers of all time, with hits, Gentle On My Mind, Galveston, Wichita Lineman, By The Time I Get to Phoenix and Rhinestone Cowboy.

In 2011 he announced that after many years of suffering short term memory loss, it was in fact the effects of Alzheimer's disease and that his ability to perform and record music was coming to an end.

Throughout 2012 and 2013, Glen Campbell performed a worldwide Goodbye tour for all his fans to enjoy his music one last time.

Join us here in London City at 12pm SL (8pm UK) this Saturday for a Concert, celebrating the career of the Rhinestone Cowboy as he rides off into the sunset.

London City North - Botox

The residential region, London City North has had a bit of a make-over.   The lake now extends to the west, connecting the waterways to London City West and the Seaside.

London City's version of Percy Thrower, (Ernie), has been out busily re-planting summer shrubs, tidying up some of the gardens and setting up bird boxes and feeding tables to bring more wildlife to the area.

Take a wander around London City North and enjoy the improvements.

Covenant Update: Vampires

A recent spate of nuisance players of the Pyramid style game, 'Bloodlines' has led to a change in our covenant.

To protect residents visiting London City, any activity we detect such as TP's offered to new residents by clan members, or active Attack HUDs, will result in the removal of the offenders.

Those playing Bloodlines are reminded that hunting on non-role play estates such as London City is considered as harassment.

We ask that visitors help our Support team to 'weed the garden', by reporting Vampire/Lycan activity.

Premier: Emmylou Harris Concert

Emmylou Harris is an American singer and songwriter.

Back in the 60s she was spotted by Gram Parsons who recognized her special talent of introducing harmonies that the song writers had overlooked.  After Gram's untimely and bizarre death, Emmylou went solo and carved her own career.

She has recorded with Bob Dylan, John Denver, Dolly Parton, Linda Ronstadt, Roy Orbison, Neil Young and most recently toured with Mark Knopfler.

In 1995 she diverged from country for a new Indy-style sound for her album "Wrecking Ball", which was panned by critics as career suicide, and yet sold more then 5 million copies.  Since then Emmylou has periodically, continued to dip her toes into this unique style of music.

She went on to win 13 Grammy's and was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2008.

Emmylou Harris appears for the first time ever in London City on Saturday.   The party begins at 12pm SL time (8pm UK) with the concert an hour later at 1pm SL time.

Severe storms about to hit the UK

Brace yourselves, they're on their way and in great British style, the storms will arrive at "tea time".

Where else on the planet, is "tea time" a recognized time of day, except in Blighty?

The Met Office has issued Amber alerts for most of the UK for today and tomorrow, with an inch of rain and hour falling throughout this evening and tomorrow.

Severe thunderstorms are expected to disrupt power networks, so make yourself a flask of tea and some corned beef sarnies and prepare to go back in time tonight and relive the blitz.

If you would like to track the storms progress, this super site shows you all the lightening strikes in real-time.  This presupposes you have internet access and power to your house!

So, strap yourselves down and enjoy the wild ride!

Heatwave in England

Whatever you're doing today, enjoy the weather and don't forget to drink plenty of fluids, especially lashings of Hobgoblin.

With temperatures in London expected to reach 92F, today is the hottest day so far this year.

If you think this is freak weather, think again, only last year on 1st July it was 98F at Heathrow.

However, back in 2003 temperatures reached 102F which would make today seem positively chilly. If you remember that 8 day heatwave, don't forget to wrap up warm today.

The hottest nighttime on record was back in 1990 when it was 75F, but we're going to get close to that today, with an overnight of 71F.
