Leaving the European Union

Today is the day that Britain files Article 50, it's formal notice of intent to withdraw from the European Union.  By triggering this Article, Britain agrees to leave the bloc by 29th March 2019.

From then on, treaties that govern membership of the EU will no longer apply to Britain.

The terms of exit will be negotiated between Britain’s 27 counterparts, and each will have a veto over the conditions.

After the Brexit, Britain will be able to self govern again, create its own trade routes, control its borders, and will no longer be required to pay into the EU, which currently costs £50m per day.

Since joining the EU, Britain has been largely prohibited from trading with countries outside of the European Union.

It is hoped that the UK will re-open trade routes with the Commonwealth.   The Commonwealth is the remnants of the original British Empire and is a voluntary association made of 52 sovereign states, including Australia, New Zealand, Cyprus, Malta, Canada, Jamaica, Trinidad, India and Pakistan.

You can listen live and debate the exit, in London City today from 12pm UK time (4am SL)  and enjoy the street party and VE dances.

Britain's new pound coin

The new UK pound coin comes into circulation today.  It was last changed 36 years ago, and it is estimated that of the 155 billion in circulation, £47 million are fake!

It is a nightmare for Tesco, the supermarket giant in the UK who failed to get coin discriminators in trolleys changed in time, forcing them to leave all trolley's unlocked.  At £150 per trolley, thats a lot of unprotected rolling stock out there.

The new 12-sided pound coin has a laser etched design where the "£" changes to "1" as you tilt the coin in the light.   It is hoped that the new design will eliminate forgeries.   Time will tell.

The round pound will cease to be legal tender in 6 months, so start splurging your old ones today and do your bit to help spend our way out of austerity!

Ronald Reagan on Mount Rushmore

During the last election in the USA, Ronald Reagan, once a Democrat who defected to the Republicans, was used by both sides of a shining example of what a President should be.

It was common throughout the campaign for both sides to quote him, posthumously second guessing his thoughts on their tactics, and hail him as the best ever modern leader of the free world.

With that in mind, at the weekend we ran a poll. Would you like to add Ronald Reagan to Mount Rushmore?

36% said Yes, 60% said No and 4% were undecided.

It is worth noting that during discussions, some who voted no, said that they had done so as they believe the monument should remain unaltered.  Others said in 200 years, whilst Washington and Lincoln would still be relevant, Reagan might be forgotten... and others just plain didn't like the idea.

Thanks for taking part.

Johnny Cash on Saturday

There are few recording artists who are considered an example of  'cool' throughout their careers and remain there long after their death, but Johnny Cash is one such person.

The American singer-songwriter was one of the top selling music artists of all time, selling more than 90 million records worldwide.

Drug and alcohol abuse featured prominently in his early career until he met and fell in love with June Carter, who was independently famous as part of the bible singing Carter Family.  Cash said he had an epiphany when meeting Carter and his devotion for her made him clean up his habits and embrace the teachings of the Lord.   (Everyone say Hallelujah!)

Johnny Cash is best know for songs, Hurt, A Boy Named Sue, Ghost-riders, Folsom Prison Blues, Ring of Fire, When The Man Comes Around, Jackson and Walk The Line.

He is appearing as a solo act for the first time ever in London City with a brand new show on Saturday and you are invited to spend some time with this great icon.

The party starts at 12pm SLT (8pm UK), with the concert an hour later at 1pm SLT.

Dorothy Squires Concert, Saturday 12pm SL

A largely forgotten legend, compared as the British voice of Ethel Merman and all the tragedy of Judy Garland is appearing in London City on Saturday.

The Party starts at 12pm SL (8pm UK) with the show at 1pm SL.

Location: http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/London%20City/105/111/23

It is hard to believe that Dorothy Squires, now so forgotten was once the highest paid British singer.

Famous for her belting voice, her outrageous ball gowns and an unbridled and profane temper, Dorothy Squires was a sensation that swept the country in the 1950's and beyond.

In 1953 she married the then unknown actor Roger Moore who was 12 years her junior and used her substantial clout with the right people in Hollywood to get him into movies and television series.

As Roger Moore's career took off, hers began to slide.  Throughout the 1960's she tried to keep her career in momentum, but she suffered from the emerging popularity of the sounds created by new and  younger singers, Cilla Black, Dusty Springfield and Sandy Shaw.

Squires and Moore separated in 1961, when Moore left her to move in with Luisa Mattioli.  Squires refused to divorce him without a substantial settlement and Moore could not re-marry until an agreement was reached and the divorce was finalised 8 years later in 1969.

Now aged 55 she managed to chart one final time with her own cover of "My Way".  New concerts followed at the Palladium, which Squires had hired herself at substantial cost, but her shows sold out in hours and she managed to cover her costs.

By 1971 Dorothy Squires career was almost at and end.   She undertook the first of 30 court cases which would keep her as the focal point in newspapers for the next 15 years.

She successfully sued the News of The World for a story they printed about her and Moore entitled "When love turned sour".

Her new career of suing people for libel began to turn bad when she dragged actor Kenneth More through the courts for accidentally referring to Mattioli as Roger Moore's wife when Moore was still married to Squires at the time.  She lost the case.

In 1973 she was charged with high kicking a taxi driver when he threw her out of his cab for being disorderly.  The same year she was charged with trying to "bribe" a BBC producer to play her records, but the case was dropped.

In 1974 her house burned down and she managed to escape the inferno clutching her jewels and love letters from Roger Moore.  She moved to a new house in Bray, which flooded three weeks later.

In 1982 she was banned from the high courts.  The high court declared her to be a Vexatious Litigant due to the number of bizarre cases she had taken out against other wealthy people seeking compensation for things said about her.  This move by the courts ended her ability from commencing any further legal action without the express permission of the court.  She never got this permission and she was never able to sue again.

Now broke due to the enormous amount of costs incurred losing nearly all of her court cases, Squires accepted the home provided by an adoring fan in Wales.  She retired there and lived out the rest of her life as a recluse.  She died of lung cancer in 1998 at the age of 83.

She is probably the chief architect of all her bad luck, caused by an obsession of pursuing the fame she had once enjoyed, which had come and gone.  Her refusal to realise that fame is fleeting was perhaps her undoing.

That said, she puts on a magnificent (if not a slightly bizarre camp comedy) show, so we hope you will enjoy us for a rather tongue in cheek cabaret concert, celebrating the superstardom of Miss Dorothy Squires.

Matt Monro's Love-In for Valentines

On Saturday, join us for a special show to celebrate Valetines Day.

Matt Monro, sometimes known as the Singing Bus Driver, was a British male vocalist whose career spanned the late 1950s 60s and 70s.

In the 1960s Matt Monro hit international fame and left for America, spending the next 20 years performing concerts and in Las Vegas, before returning to the UK shortly before his death in 1985 at just 54.

The man with the warm and beautiful voice brought enormous pleasure to millions and had many celebrity fans including Frank Sinatra who said of Monro after his death: “If I had to choose three of the finest male vocalists in the singing business, Matt would be one of them. His pitch was right on the nose; his word enunciations letter perfect; his understanding of a song thorough.”

He sang the opening movie scores to The Italian Job (On Days Like These)From Russia With Love and Born Free and is best known for songs, Portrait of My Love, If I Never Sing Another Song, We're Gonna Change The World, The Impossible Dream and Walk Away (later recorded by Elvis).

Join us for a romantic evening, with Matt Monro appearing for the first time ever in London City.

Party starts at 12pm SL (8pm UK), and the Show begins an hour later at 1pm SL
