Grid Issues

The Second Life Grid has been up and down many times over the past 24 hours.   April Linden takes up the story..

Hi everyone.

As I’m sure most of y’all have noticed, Second Life has had a rough 24 hours. We’re experiencing outages unlike any in recent history, and I wanted to take a moment and explain what’s going on.

The grid is currently undergoing a large DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack. Second Life being hit with a DDoS attack is pretty routine. It happens quite a bit, and we’re good at handling it without a large number of Residents noticing. However, the current DDoS attacks are at a level that we rarely see, and are impacting the entire grid at once.

My team (the Second Life Operations Team) is working as hard as we can to mitigate these attacks. We’ve had people working round-the-clock since they started, and will continue to do so until they settle down. (I had a very late night, myself!)

Second Life is not the only Internet service that’s been targeted today. My sister and brother opsen at other companies across the country are fighting the same battle we are. It’s been a rough few days on much of the Internet.

We’re really sorry that access to Second Life has been so sporadic over the last day. Trying to combat these attacks has the full attention of my team, and we’re working as hard as we can on it. We’ll keep posting on the Second Life Status Blog as we have new updates.

See you inworld!

April Linden
Second Life Operations Team Lead

Wrap up Warm

It must be spring, it's snowing!

They say this every year, but maybe this time they are right.   The UK is bracing for what promises to be a return to winter this week, with the worst snowfall seen in the country in over five years.

Just about everywhere is going to receive a good 6 to 8 inches of snow over the next 24 hours.

There will never be a better excuse to get snowed-in and play Second Life until at least Thursday or Friday, so keep a beady eye on the forecasts, and make sure you have plenty of Armageddon-proof food in your cupboards.

So wrap up warm, get the kettle on and login to London City, where a cup of hot Bovril awaits you.

Matt Monro's Love-In for Valentines

On Saturday, join us for a special show to celebrate Valetines Day.

Matt Monro, sometimes known as the Singing Bus Driver, was a British male vocalist whose career spanned the late 1950s 60s and 70s.

In the 1960s Matt Monro hit international fame and left for America, spending the next 20 years performing concerts and in Las Vegas, before returning to the UK shortly before his death in 1985 at just 54.

The man with the warm and beautiful voice brought enormous pleasure to millions and had many celebrity fans including Frank Sinatra who said of Monro after his death: “If I had to choose three of the finest male vocalists in the singing business, Matt would be one of them. His pitch was right on the nose; his word enunciations letter perfect; his understanding of a song thorough.”

He sang the opening movie scores to The Italian Job (On Days Like These)From Russia With Love and Born Free and is best known for songs, Portrait of My Love, If I Never Sing Another Song, We're Gonna Change The World, The Impossible Dream and Walk Away (later recorded by Elvis).

To boldly send a jolopy into space

In November 2017, you will recall the maiden flight of Flat Grid 1.  An effort to conclusively prove once and for all that the Second Life world is flat and not round.

The initial flight of our dung powered rocket was fraught with problems and our heroic astronauts were forced to return to earth in the lunar module (sofa).

Today in a gigantic leap for mankind, Flat Grid 1 launched a sculpty VW Beetle into low earth orbit.

The launch of this old banger into space, conclusively proves we can now travel to any planet in the galaxy.

We have a  trusted team of specially trained residents known as London Support, helping new users acclimatize to the virtual-world.

We are currently looking to increase our team of Support Agents, particularly during the UK daytime Monday to Friday hours (9-to-5) which is from 1am PDT.  A shift is just 2 hours, and is semi-regular ie not every single day.  But if you find that you are online at times between 1am PDT and 9am PDT and you enjoy helping new users, please get in touch.

You do not have to be an expert, but you do have to be friendly and engaging.

Everly Brothers on Saturday

Appearing  this Saturday: The Everly Brothers.

Don and Phil Everly first became famous back in 1957 with Bye Bye Love and quickly established themselves as Rock n Rollers for the rest of that decade. Wake Up Little Susie, Cathy's Clown and Walk Right Back followed successively before they moved into the rock-a-ballad style they later became synonymous with.

In the mid 1960's they chart topped with, Crying In The Rain, Devoted To You, All I Have To Do Is Dream, Love Is Strange, Ebony Eyes, When Will I Be Loved and other softer rock songs.

By the start of the 1970's both brothers had become addicted to amphetamines which lead to a nervous breakdown for Don and the duo stopped recording. By the time both were recovered, disagreements had turned into a feud and the brothers did not perform, nor communicate with each other for a decade and pursued fruitless solo careers.

Thirteen years after the split, they performed some tense reunion concerts together beginning in the UK in 1983 where they had agreed that they would only talk to each other whilst on stage, but only if it was necessary.  Encouraged by the media hype of the reunion, in 1984 they recorded, On The Wings Of A Nightingale which was to be their final song to enter the charts.

By the 1990's the brothers had made peace with each other, but their stop-start careers had eroded their following and they continued to perform one-off reunion concerts every few years until their last appearance in 2004 as featured artists for the Simon & Garfunkel tour Old Friends, Live On Stage.

Phil Everly died in 2014, but the Everly Brothers legacy will live on.
We invite you to experience their heyday and bask in the incredible love songs penned by these talented and troubled souls.

Party in the Park is at 12pm SL (8pm UK) with the stage show an hour later.
