Bonfire Night and Passenger Concert, Saturday

Passenger was originally a Brit folk/rock band formed in 2003.

When they split up in 2007, lead singer Mike Rosenberg continued his career as a solo artist under the name of Passenger, busking his way around Europe and appearing at fringe festivals.

Then suddenly this year he exploded onto the scene with three chart topping songs in quick succession,   Let her Go, The Wrong Direction and Holes.

Having written over 200 songs, Passenger is receiving the critical acclaim that eluded the band for so long.

Enjoy his music, this weekend as part of our Season's Change month, where you can win 500L for being the Best in Winter Wear / Guy Fawkes.

Also... Bonfire night in the UK, so join us for some wonderful fireworks as we lag out the region in the name of entertainment!

Penny for the Guido?
And now a potted history of how Guy Fawkes and Bonfire Night might have come into tradition...

Back in 1605 (GMT), Guido Fawkes  wanted to protest on how Catholics were treated.  Too little wine, not enough unleavened bread etc.

Guido later became known as Guy in a brand refresh to help sell more rockets.
Anyway, Fawkes decided that they would blow up the Houses of Parliament, (visit HOP in London here) in particular the House of Lords, by smuggling in hundreds of gunpowder kegs into the cellar and detonating them on 5th November as the King (James I) was opening Parliament.

Unfortunately for Guy, one of his gang ran off at the gums and blabbered about this heinous plot.  Word soon spread and they were caught in the act.

The King was quite annoyed about it all and as a slap on the wrist for doing such a thing, they decided to chop bits of him off and wave them around, hang him for a couple of minutes so not quite dead, disembowel him and do other unmentionable things to embarrass him.

This gruesome method of torture "hanged, drawn and quartered",  was reserved exclusively for traitors. Petty crime (such as stealing some bread), resulted in minor punishment, such as having limbs severed or being boiled in oil.

Here in the UK, on the 5th November (or the closest Saturday to it), we celebrate this bit of horrible history with a firework display (Guy loved to partaay) and huge bonfires burning an effigy of Guy.

If you're stuck for a costume this weekend, grab a Guy Fawkes mask from the Freebie Shops in London City.

Come and warm your chestnuts on the fire!

Hurricane Storm Brings Chaos for Millions

During the night, England has had the worst storms since 1987 and its not quite over yet,  as winds are set to peak in London at around 8am Monday morning.

Currently all trains and planes are suspended in the UK, but it's not all bad news!   It seems that most of London's workforce will be enjoying a day off as Monday gets tagged on to their weekend!

So, if you find yourself marooned at home with lashings of hot tea and biscuits, why not visit London City where you can do the British thing and talk about the weather.

TP in to have a jolly good moan about it  http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/London%20City/73/238/24

Yes! We hear you

Having London City 'Voice Enabled', has been a real eye opener and by and large, very successful.

With hundreds of people piling in to hear other regulars on voice for the first time, each eager to have their say and show the personality behind their avatar.   We have had some splendid evenings and some extremely funny comedy moments throughout this trial.

Then as time progressed, the voice trolls would come and have some fun winding people up, talking in strange accents where you just know you're being recorded for another of those 'hilarious' YouTube videos, where the guy says bums and titties every thirty seconds and everyone else gets very cross and gives him the reaction he craves for his latest film.

But the show stoppers were the people who keyed their microphones and just talked.  And they talk and talk and talk.  Never stopping for an instant, never listening for a response, they drone.  Incessant, indefatigable and without end ... and boring the arses off everyone who had the misfortune to encounter them.   What's more, as people start moving away to give their ears a rest from this infernal slavering of gums, they get pursued for more ear bashing.  It is true.  Empty vessels make the most noise.

That said, the ability to have voice is sheer bliss, finest cabaret and a joy to have this opt-in and opt-out layer of entertainment... so long as you can opt out.

Here in London we want to keep the customer satisfied and we recently held polls, over three weeks in three bouts to ensure an accurate representation of feelings: 191 (46%) of voters thought Voice being on was Good and 222 (54%) thought it was Bad.

With the opinion poll being so close, clearly this is something we will review from time to time to ensure we are still representing the majority.

So it's the end of an ear ache as voice gets hobbled in London City(1) for now, but all is not lost. Last Sunday, we turned on our fifth region.  It is attached to the hub area London City and it has Voice Enabled!    It is not fully built yet, but the voice area is up and running and it is on the doorstep of the London City hub.

To use voice, just cross the bridge, there is a whole new region waiting to hear you. http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/London%20City4/85/26/25

Bring your earplugs and see you on YouTube.  More about the new region later.

Please add your comment on this story.  Anonymous comments are enabled and being a popular place we're used to trolls, it won't kill us... feel free to be edited :)
